ARTC to spend $20.5 million on ADL-MEL upgrade

On page 9 of The Advertiser for Saturday June 12 1999 is a small article
about ARTC spending money over the next 2 and a half years on reducing
wheel noise in the Adelaide Hills and "extending the track" - presumably
lengthening passing loops and creating the Blakiston loop.

In a widely-distributed pamphlet on the SA state budget, for the first
time in who knows how long, the $100 million commitment on the Alice
Springs to Darwin line means that rail expenditure by the state actually
comes close to road expenditure. Still, it's a lot less than the Mount
Barker Road upgrade to eliminate the Devil's Elbow.
