That's the one, the good o'l knife switch, many a
Commonwealth Railways loco has been jump started
because of this.

I have jump started an NSU narrow gauge loco from its
back to back mate using a very long arc welding cable
(actually the work and earth cables joined end on end
with the couplers acting as earth return) from one
knife switch to the other.  There was no siding to put
them side by side.
