Tablet working (now gone) may have followed British tradition but I

The British use route signalling - both mechanical and colour light.
There has been an interesting thread on uk.railway recently on the
problems of signalling high speed junctions using current British
practice.

Speed  signa*l*ing  can only be North American -;]
