Re: Interesting Workings at Brisbane - [Qld] Obviously

We are using the Beyer-Garratt because QR won't allow tender first running
between Thorneside and Cleveland. With the 32km/hr speed limit tender
first, there isn't enough time for the sections. Unfortunately, the DD17 is
still in pieces and is not available.

Cleveland is a dead end station with two platforms. In the past, we used a
diesel attached to the train and it shunted the train from one platform to
the other to release the steam loco to run round. With the normal emu's now
crossing at Wellington Point, there isn't enough time to shunt between
trains. Fortunately, QR have recently built a stabling siding at Cleveland
and this is where the diesel will be. After the steam train arrives, the
diesel will shunt the carriages to the stabling siding to release the steam
loco and then push the carriages back into the platform so the steam loco
can set back onto them. This will be done while an emu is in the other
platform as it sits there for about 20 minutes. Shunting is also
complicated because there is no signalling to allow the loco to set back on
to the train and it has to get authority to pass a red signal.

Expected times are

Tickets are still available, particularly for the one way trip Cleveland to
Roma Street and the two local trips. Phone Brisbane 07 3289 2435 (1900 to

Information Centre near the station at Cleveland.
