There were even a number in Auckland until a few years ago. There was
one at the bus terminus at the foot of the volcano I live on. As in
Melbourne, they fell into disrepair after the requirement for drivers to
turn the key in them was abandoned, and they all seem to have
disappeared here now.

I presume they weren't needed in Melbourne because all the trams now are
electronically tracked by either GPS or something like it.  The buses
here now are getting GPS equipment too.
