Indeed - one of my favourite songs is a musical hall number from the 1930s
"Riding on top of the car", about the joys of riding upstairs on double-deck
trams.

Also, Americans would say "I don't have the car fare", meaning I haven't got
enough money to catch a tram. The Americans use "auto" at least as much as
they use "car" to mean "motorcar".
