What most Caltrain supporters want is for Caltrain to upgraded to rapid
transit levels of service. Examples of this include Germany's S-Bahns.
Maybe you should look at the suburban rail system in Perth, Australia. 3 of
the 4 lines radiating out of downtown Perth are old Westrail lines that have
been upgraded for commuter service. In the early 1990s, the lines were
electrified the trains run at transit headways all day. I'll copy aus.rail
so that those Down Under can correct me if necessary.

Doing something similiar with Caltrain would be a heckuva lot cheaper than
building new BART extensions.
