638/738 was the last of the 620 class and was specially built to haul an
ETP van on the Murwillumbah line with a higher powered Cummins engine
rather than the Detroit 6/110 engines fitted to the other "country"
620s. Its job was to follow the Brisbane Express (The second division as
it was always called by the locals) from Grafton and stop at all
stations Grafton - Casino and then run the branch line to Murbah.
Previously the Express stopped all stations Grafton - Casino and divided
at Casino where 2 cars and a van went up the branch. At that time (c
1970) there were stations every few miles on the main line and every
mile on parts of the branch. All of these stations were either timed
stops or "a" stops (Pick up or set down on request). The introduction of
this set enabled the express to be sped up considerably.

When the Gold Coast Motorail was introduced 638/738 was released for
other duties.
