They didn't make as big a loss then as the 80s though when they were still a
job creation scheme but there were a lot less coal face jobs (ie staffing
stations, driving trains, safeworking, etc). Wonder why???
Was it purely that there was a lot of unnecessary management positions
created, that rollingstock was upgraded (and everything else left to rot) or
were there other reasons?
