ELs on the Skinny Gauge

The reason, I am told by a Fitter Foreman, why ELs can not have bigger
traction motors is that the wiring from the main alternator to the traction
motors is only suitable for small traction motors, the wiring gauge can not
take the extra current. Clyde locos when built have a standard wire gauge
that can handle the largest traction motor manufactured at the time. That
is why Clyde/EMD locomotives can be upgraded, without having to rewire the
locomotive.
