re: NORTH SYDNEY TRAMWAY BRIDGE

An earlier posting to this ng raised the subject of whether the former
Tramway Bridge was dismantled for re-use. As most readers will be aware,
this steel arch bridge used to carry the two eastern tracks used by trams
across the Bradfield Highway at the northern approach to the Harbour
Bridge.

I can recollect some proposal in newspapers of the era (late 1950s) for
possible re-use of the bridge to span the Lane Cove River to replace the
old two lane De Burgh's Bridge, carrying Ryde Road. No doubt an archive
search through the RTA and Sydney Morning Herald could turn up some
interesting details.

In the event this never happened - a new concrete bridge was eventually
built. The bridge if adapted to road use would have required duplication
or substantial widening from its original form, as the existing concrete
bridge of six lanes is near capacity.
