There's still a few bridges in Adelaide with open stanchions.  One got
hit a couple of years ago by an NR train (at low speed), and all that
caused was road traffic problems while the bridge was closed for
repairs.  That one (Bakewell bridge) had concrete stanchions not
steel, but the effect was the same.  Some of them were replaced with a
solid concrete stanchion, but only the one that got hit (I think).
