QR to build new carriages

The new QR tilt train for Cairns has been discussed in this news group but
nothing appears to have been noted about the other new carriages to be
built.

During the last election, it was announced (and since confirmed) that QR
will build 21 new non-airconditioned replica heritage carriages at the
Townsville Workshops. They may use surplus SX suburban car underframes.
They will replace most of the current wooden heritage cars in excursion
service (not Kuranda Cars). The remaining wooden cars may be reserved for
special occasions only such as centenaries.

It is believed that some cars will be based in centres other than Brisbane
enabling Traveltrain and anyone else to run excursions around the state.
