I believe that long line announcements are of the type that I got at
Warrabrook the other day (from Broadmeadow presumably!)

"Attention all passengers at stations on this line - the train due to leave
Maitland at 12.XX (can't remember exactly) is running approximately 15
minutes late - the connection at Hamilton will be held."

Basically, it can be set to all stations on a line, or selectively for a
particularl station, and is remotely controlled from afar. (But then again,
I have been wrong before!)
