I went and had a look today.  My guess would be that the drivers perished before
the train got to the mud.  From my observations, the lead loco was knocked onto
its side by the debris from the old bridge abutment.  The loco then hit the
opposite abutment of the new bridge, shearing off the roof.  The inertia of the
train then pushed the loco into the mud.  That is what I believe happened.
