W-Class and ATMS

Hi all,
today I saw a W-class with the metcard machines and validators.. I only saw
it from a distance but are the validators like bolted to the entry poles
right near the doors?? This seems a bit odd as wouldn't they be in the way
of the already cramped entrance (towards the drivers cabins that is)

Does anyone know whether these ATM's are turned on because I couldn't see a
conductor on board (the tram was at Melb Uni shunting area)
