Melbourne-Adelaide daylight trains

Regarding all the discussion about the Overland's decline, didn't ANR 
run daylight services from Melb to Adelaide around 1983 - they were 
described as "very successful".  Perhaps that is a better option, but 
what is the fastest time a train today could do the Melb-Adel run 
including a few stops ?

Tell commented that the Overland has been in decline since the fifties.  
But even in the 80s there were some very long (15+ car) consists.  Any 
comment on how profitable these were ?  Obviously a lot of passengers 
might have been concession pass holders.
