The rule to remember is... if you have not completed your journey then do
not use the automatic gates.  If you are changing trains, changing from
train to bus etc... do not use the automatic gates.  Use the manual gate if
you need to.

There is no need to exit the paid area of Central/Sydney Terminal while
changing trains unless the not so common situtation where a City Rail train
uses platforms 1 2 or 3 (Countrylink platforms) and the interconnecting
gate between CityRail and Countrylink sections has not been opened.

Since CityRail journeys may not be broken there is no need to leave the
gates opened.  I don't know why at times they do.
