My guess is that your manual refers to the second order for VR S310-
S317. Clyde wrote their manuals to cover all possibilities of a model
so can be viewed as a generic model A manual (If your loco dosn't have
a hostler control or D/B then skip this chapter !!)

Model A is/was NSWGR 42 class, VR S class and CR GM 12 class.

42 class had (as delivered)
 D12 main generator,
 D37 traction motors,
hostler rear end with no train brake and toilet where the firemans
seat should have been (rear windows in drivers side and rear door
only), and
dynamic brakes.
Nos 4201-4206 delivered 1955-1956.

S class had
D12 (S300-309) or D22 (S310-317) main generator,
 D37 (S300-S309) or D47 (S310-S317) traction motors,
full rear end controls with train brake but no cab ! (rear windows in
both sides and door), and
dynamic brakes.
 S 300 - S 317 delivered 1957-1961.

GM 12 class had D12 (GM12-GM21) or D22 (GM22-GM29) main generators
(GM30 - GM 47 may have D22s or D32s I'm not sure.),
 D37 (GM12-GM21), D47 (GM22-GM26), D57 (GM27-GM29), D67 (GM30-GM39),
D77 (GM40-GM47) traction motors.
GM 17-GM 21 had hostler controls (glazed one side of rear end only)
GM12-GM16 and GM22-GM29 did not. Don't know about the others.
GM 12 -GM 36 do not have dynamic brake, GM 37 - GM 47 have d/b.
GM 12 - GM 47 delivered 1951-1968.

Individual "in service" dates for all A's are available if required.

The Operators manual referred to them as "model A locomotives". The
builders plate called them "A7" for 4201-4206, S300-S317 & GM12-GM29
AND "A16C" for GM30-GM47. The model change occured between GM 29
(22/3/63) and GM 30 (9/12/64).
