Well, I was nearly right.  The introduction of a statewide numbering
and classification scheme for tramway rolling stock co-incided with
the conversion  of steam motors to one man operation.  The opportunity
was taken to add the "A" classification after the number on most steam
motors as they entered the workshops for conversion to one-man
operation.

However, motors 19, 34, 39, 63, 72, 78, 117, 118 and 125 received the
"A" after their number prior to conversion to one man operation.
Motors 126 to 132 were built after the standard numbering scheme was
introduced and always carried the A after their number
