Melbourne Airport to city has three choices:
Met fares (limited service, between the peaks Mon.-Fri.): cheap and
awkward, involves changing from private bus to Met train at Essendon.
Skybus: one pays per person; the city depot is away from your destination,
but there is an in-city distribution available as part of the fare.
taxi: won't be much dearer than two Skybus fares.
I recommend taxi.
Thereafter: Met zonal fares are available for all modes by the day. Either
1+2+3 or 1+2 according to your range of exploration.
