http://www.transperth.wa.gov.au is the correct URL for Transperth's trip
planner.
I've just spent an hour or so on it looking at times and route choices
for various bus/rail journeys that I used to make. I might want to point
out that this time spent was not because it takes a long time to get an
answer (I found it very quick), but the large number of trips and times I
tried. I think Transperth has done a good job with the journey planner.
You could type in two street addresses and it would even give walking
distances between the bus stop and home and if you need to transfer from
a bus to a train. The system also allows you to look at partial
timetables for the private bus operators (you have to put in several
queries for the full timetables). This is an advance (the private bus
timetables were previously unavailable on the web), but it should be
possible to get all times for a particular route via the service (like
Metrobus offers on its website). I couldn't get the 'Return Journey'
button to work.
However, the major flaw has nothing to do with the journey planner - it
is the frequency of the service itself - headways are often irregular and
gaps of 2-4 hours with no service are common on Sundays and evenings on
many routes.
