RPOs don't check tickets!

Have you noticed that the RPOs (is that what they are still called?)
often talk among themselves rather than look at your tickets? Especially
true at Spencer Street. There is usually a "heavy" superintending to
catch a wayward commuter who might try to run the gauntlet. Are the RPOs
armed? They have mobile phones: what are they used for? Also, they "hang
around" to have a smoke! The PTC should ban smoking by RPOs. Have you
noticed how many of them have tattoos? Still their appearance is a bit
more mordern than the old VR "flying squads" with their 1940s overcoats
and felt hats! They used to travel in threes and change carriages at each
station. How did they inspect tickets on the old dog boxes?
