Noticed about 7 or so Y-classes on the scrap road at Sth. Dynon on
friday. This probably means that very few are now available for
service and yet isn't there supposed to be a loco shortage for the
coming harvest or is it that by today's standards, the low-powered Y's
are of limited use? Can they not all be MU'd?
I can't help but think that a Y would make a great loco for some
short-line hauler. Someone like GNR could make a bit of dough doing up
a Y and selling it to an enterprising short-hauler.
When freight is finally privatised, private sidings would be
encouraged and Y's would have a future - even if they are now all over
30 years old. Go well at the new Dandenong Intermodal.
