It actually doesnt need fuel , but it is refuelled to allow for failure of a
power car on the way back.
An XPT power car holds 4500 litres of fuel and uses 1800 to 2000 litres for
the Sydney - Melb trip.
Ive been there when its been refueled, so that under normal circumstances it
can easily run Sydney - Melb - Sydney on one tank.
It would get marginal however if one of the two power cars failed on the way
back to Sydney, and the failure was north of Coota.
A little bit of common sense is needed here.
Prior to the XPTs running , Spencer St platform 1 was able to easily cope with
3 SG trains per day in both directions for many years.
Platform 2 SG was used only for emergencies or specials.
Strange that today it cant support 2 SG trains per day.
