One of the problems faced by rail in the Adelaide - Melbourne corridor
now is that it simply not time - competitive with road.
Freight trains take something like 15 hours due to track speed
restrictions and train working requirements.
Road is considerably faster.
A new crossing of the Mt Lofty Ranges, or any improvement to alignments
must take the time factor into consideration. Any time improvement
is worth-while.
It is in Victoria that the real time savings can be made with track
upgrades. Our NR driver correspondents must think it takes forever
to travel from Geelong to Ararat!
