the xx represents the horizontal distance.  A 1 in 30 grade is 1' of rise
over 30' of track length

So an elevator is 1 in 0, 1' rise for 0' horizontal, a 1 in 1 grade would
be a 45 deg angle, more like a laundry chute!!!
