Degrees = arctangent(gradient in fraction)

or

Degrees =arctangent (gradient in %/100)

Thus 

arctan(50%/100) = arctan(0.5) = 26.6 degrees

and

arctan(100%/100) = arctan (1.)  = 45 degrees (this is the one you
refer to)
