Tasmanian observations
Yesterday, 6 December 1998, I followed Tasrail's paper train from the ANM
mill at Boyer to Tea Tree on the South Line. The consist was
2117/2110//2118 haul ZR2/ZP1 and 34 flats of paper modules. The train,
including 4 types of rebuilt Z type units, attracted a lot of attention from
Sunday drivers. Tasrail trains move a lot faster these days, this train was
doing about 60km/h on most sections.
The latest "rebuild" is the cab on 2110 (the former Z1) which has been
rebuilt with a lowered sloped nose and larger cab front windows. IMHO, the
ugliest Z so far (and they were not a pretty locomotive to start with).
That evening another of the former Z class was in Hobart, which is unusual,
as Hobart does not normally have a shunting locomotive. (Maybe broken
down.) Two TU tank wagons, previously used to transport liquid clay from a
mine at Tonganah, in Tasmania's north east, to Burnie's Amcor paper mill,
were also in Hobart yard. Not sure why.
Cheers
Ben
