Re: Bondi Beach Rail Extension

The question about work on the Bondi Beach line brings to mind matters
related to this extension and the New Southern Railway with their private
stations.

Because Sydney persists with its antediluvian mileage fare structure and
individual buttons on its ticket vending machines, think of the magnitude of
the job of adding extra buttons and changing the labelling on every machine
in the system. And this will be occurring for every other new line, etc.,
in the future.

Wake up, Sydney! Introduce a simple zonal fare structure and you'll only
have to modify your machines once. Whilst you're at it, make it a FULLY
multimodal system so that you aren't the laughing stock of the overseas
visitors (as well as those from Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and Geelong) in 2000.

Also, surcharges for certain stations is quite unacceptable, as well as
being confusing for the very people that we want to get on to public transport.

Despite what is being said here and in the press, the Metcard system is
basically simple and generally it works well.
