fertiliser and grain wagons

Can a railway utilise the same wagons to transport grain and fertiliser
?  I remember reading about AHGX hoppers, which I understand AN used for
grain haulage, being used for superphosphate haulage from SA to Vic.
Would you need a dedicated group of fertiliser only wagons or would you
just steam clean or disinfect them after hauling super and then use them
for grain ?
