Little things that you wonder about

G'day,

y'know how you see things around the rail scene in general, and wonder
"why do they do that?"

Well at the moment, I'm just thinking......
Melbourne Spencer St Platform 1 has an SG runaround.
Melbourne Spencer St Platform 2 does not.
and.....
The XPT which provides Sydney services does not need to runaround.
The Overland does.
and yet....
The XPT uses platform 1, and The Overland uses Platform 2

So I'm just wondering - why not switch them around? What makes the
Sydney service so special that it must use platform 1? Why not save GSR
the expense of having to use a pilot every night and every morning to
handle the Overland? yes, you'd need to modify the Spencer St fuelling
facility to fuel the XPT over on Plat 2 (not too hard). That way, the
Overland's NR could haul in the cars, runaround, pick up the motorail in
the process, and save GSR some money. And XPT passengers would find
there's very little inconvenience in having to use platform 2.

Cheers,
CH.
