Minister for Transport and Main Roads, HON. V. G. JOHNSON

23/4/98

ROBINA STATION ONE STEP CLOSER TO COMPLETION

The final link in the $375 million Gold coast Railway will become a step closer tomorrow (Friday 24 April) when the overhead power lines between Nerang and Robina stations become live, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Vaughan Johnson said today.

Mr Johnson stressed the importance of the public staying clear of the 25,000 volt overhead wiring and high speed track.

"Even coming within three metres of the line could prove fatal," Mr Johnson said.

"High speed trains will be travelling on the tracks from April 24. The trains travel at speeds of up to 140km/hour and won't be able to stop if you are where you shouldn't be," he said.

Mr Johnson said that all stations along the Gold Coast line have secure fencing, warning signs and barriers at appropriate places to ensure that no person unknowingly enters dangerous areas. As well, security cameras have been installed at Nerang, Helensvale and Robina.

In addition, QR had in place an extensive rail safety education program in place, including providing information to schools and community groups, which emphasis the importance of acting safely around rail lines.

The Gold Coast railway extension to Robina will open with a family fun day on Sunday 31 May, from 9am and 4pm. The day will begin with a breakfast, followed by the official opening by Queensland Premier Mr Rob Borbidge about 9.30am.

There will be on-going entertainment provided by Queensland Rail and Gold Coast theme parks. Attractions will include competitions, free amusement rides, street performers and an outside radio broadcast.
