Well I don't work for cityrail but I can fill the gaps.
C = Six car stainless steel suburban, Chopper controled
L, R and S are the same type of carrige of varying age and build but:
L = 2 car set, Powered driving car + driving tailer
R = 6 car set, generaly 3 powered driving + 3 trailers
S = 4 car set, almost always 2 powered driving + 2 trailers.
Also their are K sets, which were the predecesor of the C sets. These
have either aircon or forced ventilation. And as far as I am aware can
be configured 2, 4 or 6 cars.
