I checked some books over the weekend and it was mainly mechanical failures
which caused them to be loco hauled, but the derailment (which was at
Erskineville) made things worse by damaging the drive train on one or two
cars.

reliability point of view when used as a self propelled unit. The electrical
system was overly complex and prone to causing failures.
