More reliable I would expect as they are less complicated beasts. The PTC
when the Upfield line was cut off for Sillylink construction originally ran
Comengs and swapped them I think every Wednesday. Eventually they got sick
of the Comengs unreliability (even though they kept a spare to cover break
downs, there was the odd time when two trains would break down in service
leaving only 2 to run a 3 train timetable.) and replaced them all with 3 car
Hitachi sets. They only swapped them when they were broken down and I
believe the reliability of the service increased considerably.
