Well, I can't say what the motivation was in the beginning for discontinuing use of the doors in the semi-auto fashion,
but it was sure short sighted.

Works absolutely fine on many suburban systems across western Europe. Places like Berlin and Barcelona are like
Melbourne trains where you have to use a little bit of muscle to pull the handles too, and everyone seems perfectly
happy to pull/push/twist/tug/rub/lick/kiss/kick or whatever to get the doors open at a station.

At least here the things would open under their own power when the magic lever was pulled/button pressed.
