The Great Southern Railway in an NT press release has said that it is considering running two Ghan services per week all year round. There could be one direct Sydney to Alice Springs and one Sydney via Adelaide to Alice Springs service. No mention of Melbourne so it might ensure that the Broken Hill to Crystal Brook line stays open. Cheers ----Tell Alice Springs NT
