Australian Senate Hansard for 21st October 1997

PETITIONS
Darwin to Adelaide Railway

This document has DRAFT status

Darwin to Adelaide Railway

To the Honourable the President and Members of the Senate assembled in
Parliament:

We the undersigned citizens of the Commonwealth of Australia showeth
that:

We are concerned with the outstanding debt owed to South Australia by the
Commonwealth Government of Australia for South Australia's investment in
Northern Territory.

Payment of this debt was to be in the form of a railway line from Darwin
to Adelaide as a legislated agreement passed by Parliament in 1910 called the
Northern Territory Acceptance Act 1910.

We have waited 87 years for the Commonwealth Government to honour and
complete its obligation to the citizens of South Australia, and your
petitioners therefore pray that this House will take all appropriate steps to
ensure the fulfilment of this obligation.

And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.

by Senator Minchin (from 90 citizens).
