The Ghan Preservation Society is located 9.5 kms South of
Alice Springs at Macdonnell Siding. The old narrow gauge
track continues South to Ewaninga Siding 33 kms from the
Alice. The Narrow and Standard gauge joined at a temporary
dual gauge turnout at a place named Todd Junction by ANR.
After the final narrow gauge train departed Alice Springs on
the 9/12/1980, ANR ripped out the dual gauge turnout and
replaced the temporary dual gauge track with the standard
gauge continuos welded rail on concrete sleepers into the
Alice.
At various times since then, there has been talk of trying
to get the old Ghan running back into town.
