The Southern Aurora stopped running in 1987. It was combined with the
Spirit of Progress as the Melbourne Express/Sydney Express until 1993 when
it was replaced by the XPT.

In Melbourne: Puffing Billy at Belgrave, ARHS Railway Museum at North
Williamstown, City Circle tram (free).

In Sydney: The new Sydney Light Rail, Blue Mountains and the Zig Zag
Railway, Illawarra Light Railway at Albion Park, Cockatoo Run Port Kembla
- Moss Vale (will probably be steam again in May). There will probably be
some 3801 Limited and/or NSWRTM main line tours.

Blue Mountains and the Zig Zag Railway.

Yes, but there are only 18 sleeping berths on each train. You might be
better off travelling in daylight where you can see more scenery.

You'll find timetables at http://www.railpage.org.au/tt/
