In relation to the bomb threat at Redfern on 16/10/97. There was in fact
no "bomb threat" merely a suspicious package found under some stairs. The
station staff looked inside the bag and saw a small gas cylinder and gas
igniter. The Police were then contacted and it took approximately 90
minutes for them to get on the scene. The reason for the delay, a Police
Officers car broke down and he went home first to get his own instead of
calling for Police assistance on his radio.

Certainly there is a case for the Police to respond quicker to these
situations. As this incident showed one strategically placed bag stopped
the complete rail system and brought it to it's knees. God help us during
the Olympic Year.
