Unit Train Numbers on Hunter Coal Trains

In the last few weeks I have noticed that all coal trains have a red
magnetic sign placed on the front of the loco. The sign shows the unit
train number (eg PT Waratah 25). Does anyone know what this is all
about. I can only think that it may be for the dump station operators to
easily identify the train .
