I guess the obvious question is why not simply run the Overland faster.
If it was hauled by an EL it could run at 135km/h tomorrow providing that the
PTC would let it, which Im sure they wouldnt,and as an EL is no heavier , axle
load wise than an XPT power car you would also assume that an XPT wouldnt be
allowed to run at 130 or 160 or whatever.
However there is no reason why the Overland could not run at 130 km/h in SA
between Wolseley & Murray Bridge,although most of the time is lost in Vic
between Melb and Ararat.
As a matter of interest is the XPT allowed to run at 160km/h in Victoria on
the sections of the Melb / Albury line which are 60kg/m.
Likewise is the Oveland allowed 115 km/h between Newport & Geelong bearing in
mind that this section of track is 60 kg/m rail on concrete, ie as good as you
can get.
