The Overland on the evening of Monday 4th was also headed up by an NR,
its new paintwork showing up the rather tatty Overland cars. Most of
the lettering has faded so much you can see the individual brush
strokes - is there really a commitment to keep the poor old Overland
running ?

I only saw the overland by chance, having taken Junior on a short trip
to Sunbury, which at approx. $3.50 for a return ticket must be the
cheapest (relatively) high speed diesel-hauled trip available. The
down was an N hauled N set (4.45 ex North Melbounre; very nice!),
which proceeded to run around at Sunbury. Got a photo of an up
sprinter passing the N at 5.25, which turned out to be the train I
wanted to catch back. Missed this by a hair and had to wait 45
minutes for a P 6*H P setup, no where near as nice to ride in - rough
and noisy, and the seats don't line up with the windows. In the
meantime, the N and its three cars returned _empty cars_ from Sunbury.
Can't think of any particular reason for this other than it would have
run empty - the 6.23 up left Sunbury with a grand total of 4
passengers, including self and my son.

On the way back we passed a short SG goods with an NR&BL, and another
longer one with an NR and G.

Anyone know what the regular makeup of the Kyneton pass is these days
? I'm contemplating moving to Woodend and commuting by train - don't
know if I could face H sets every day !
