VR loco-class codes are arbitrary, although with some mnemonic
background. They are recycled, and most have had three eras of use. If
you travel to Melbourne one day and browse through Railfan Shop (Market
St & Flinders Lane corner), you will find lots of useful books, including
Poweer Parade (VR locos).
Pacific is a reference to the wheel arrangement (4-6-2). Some
encyclopaedias cover the full list.
