Poor Met connections

In an earlier post, I commented that a direct Sandringham train could
overtake a loop Lilydale/Belgrave train in the evening, allowing a
just-missed train to be caught. This works only for the departures at 35
past the hour, as the Sandringham line has 20 minute headways in the
evening; Lilydale & Belgrave have 30 minute headways. Fortunately for
me, the train which I had just missed was the 22.35. It would be far
worse just missing the 23.05.

Much worse was the poor journey home last night (Sat.21.6). My train
(the ARHS special from Colac) arrived at Spencer St at 21.20. We walked
round for the 21.38 (21.35 ex Flinders St) Lilydale. These trains were
not running via the loop; the sign indicated to take the next train to
Flinders St (a St Albans at 21.42). This just missed the 21.43 Lilydale
direct; we had to wait for the 22.13. There had been no warning of the
temporary change at Surrey Hills or at Spencer St that morning, although
there were signs at Spencer St in the evening.
