Sydney to Albury via Granville is 646.2km. This is measured via the Up main
at Frampton (there is no 444km post on the down) and via the Down main at
Bethungra (the Up main has km posts 454+1, 454+2 and 454+3). The total
difference at the two deviations amounts to about 4 km. Albury to Melbourne
(SSS) via the Standard gauge is 317.4km. Via the Broad Gauge it is 307 km.

So I guess the rail distance from Sydney to Melbourne is approx 646.2 - 1.5
+ 317.4 = 962.1km.
And from Melbourne to Sydney 317.4 + 646.2 + 2.5 = 966.1km.

The shortest rail distance from Melbourne to Sydney would be 307 (broad
gauge) + 646.2 - 1.5 = 951.7km - 6.5 inches!!!!? ;-)
Of course this is via Granville so take off 3.5km for distance via Regents
Park. (don't know about via East Hills).

I guess Countrylink count the km post mileages (646 + 307 = 953km). Much
easier, eh?
