Hi John

I do not know when the letters F and S became official
in the WTT's but I know they have been in use since the
early sixties.
There were 3 types of GM's for the purposes of the
Working Time Tables :-

"F" GM class 4 motor
"S" GM class 6 motor
"S" GM class 6 motor with dynamic brakes.
They did not even use the term GM1 or GM12 series.!

I have amongst my personal acquaintances former CR-ANR
Drivers, Electrical and Mechanical Fitters and NEVER
once did any of them ever refer to this "Phase"
business, they were simply GM's, 4 motor or 6 motor and
in the case of 37 to 47 GM 6 motor with dynamics.

If anybody has Official proof that Phase was used by
Management, Drivers and Fitters, lets hear about it.
Please do NOT quote from Enthusiast or Model
publications.!

Ponder this one....... In the book "Locomotives of
the Commonwealth Railways" published by the Mile End
Railway Museum way back in 1972 they refer to the first
"GM12's" as A16C, I understand the AMRM article on GM's
this year refers to GM's 30-47 as being A16C.!
