Up trains head towards the capital city or towards the coast.
When you travel up the range you are on a down train and when you travel
down the range you are on an up train.
Doing the skway for one leg and train the other is very popular.
It is not unusual to have up to 600 people on the train on market days so I
would definitely book a seat.
The right side is the best going up the range and the seats are now
generally on that side of the train.
I did the trip late 1996 and highly recommend it. A round trip ticket
consists of a one way train journey, one way skyway and a bus connection
between the skyway terminal and the train station. A lot of people board
the train at Freshwater Junction ( Cairns - Redlynch section). There is a
small museum? there that tells the story of the Kuranda railway. There is
also a restaurant consisting of wooden coaches where you can get a decent
breakfast before catching the train.
A combined ticket including transfers from your accomodation, cost $56.

If you are in the area you should try the RAILCO steam trip from Atherton
to Herberton and return. $25 adults $12.50 children.
Its a 4 hour round trip departing Platypus Park station 1030 hrs Wednesday
to Sunday and Public Holidays.
I haven't done the trip yet, but, can't wait for the opportunity to do so.
